July 7, 2020
Let me take this opportunity to provide you with an update regarding steps that have been taken in order to prepare for the 2020-21 school year. The Texas Education Agency continues to work with the office of the Governor, Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Division of Emergency Management to coordinate and plan the state’s response to COVID-19. We anticipate receiving public health planning guidance in the upcoming weeks. Like you, we are eager to learn of the guidelines and safety protocols that must be implemented. Again, we want to ensure you that the safety of our students and staff remains a top priority.
As was conveyed in our previous correspondence, we received word from TEA in late June that students will be able to choose between face-to-face instruction at school or at-home instruction. The Texas Education Agency has mandated more precise and rigorous guidelines for at-home instruction. At-home instruction will include daily lessons and checkpoints, along with support from Denison ISD, to ensure student engagement and progress. Daily attendance will be taken.
If you have not responded to the Denison ISD Parent/Guardian Survey, please take the time to do so. Our goal is 100% participation! The deadline for completing the survey is July 16 at 5:00 p.m. The initial survey can be accessed by clicking on the link at the close of this letter. We want to ensure parents that no answers on the survey are “set in stone.” We are merely using that data to inform our initial phase of planning. There will be a formal process in late July and early August for families to select at-home instruction.
Denison ISD has formed a Task Force that is charged with developing the district plan for the safe return to our campuses. Members include:
Dr. Henry Scott – Superintendent
Dr. David Kirkbride – Assistant Superintendent
Mr. Randy Reid – Assistant Superintendent
Mrs. Shonda Cannon – Director of Instruction
Mrs. Regina Prigge – Director of Special Programs and Assessment
Mrs. Rachael Ricker – Denison ISD Head Nurse
Mr. David Self – Director of Facilities
Mr. James Cottrell – Director of Custodians
Mr. Randy Taylor – Director of Transportation
The district plan will be posted to the Denison ISD website on July 27, 2020.
In addition to the District Task Force, each Principal is forming a Campus Task Force (comprised of a variety of stakeholders including teachers and parents) that will develop campus-specific COVID-19 protocols.
In closing, we want to make you aware of an additional survey that we need for you to complete. This is a brief survey that targets district transportation, as well as the availability of thermometers in our DISD homes. You can access this survey by clicking on the links below.
